With the advent and subsequent explosive growth of social media sites like Facebook, researching and developing family trees for living relatives has become much, much easier. In fact, the “Find Us on Facebook” tagline has a whole other meaning to us genealogists.
The vast majority of Facebook users have their Facebook totally public, allowing one to quickly glean key family tree information like birth dates, anniversaries, home towns, etc. Some even directly list the family relationships of their Facebook friends. For those that don’t, you can simply search their list of friends using their married or maiden names, and find their children, parents, cousins, etc.
A word of caution though... while most Facebook information is public, you should always handle such information with all ethical sensitivity, and protect the privacy of the living.
